Program Information: SMU-in-Spain is a semester or academic year study abroad program established in 1969. It is located in Madrid at the highly regarded Spanish academic institution, Fundación José Ortega y Gasset y Gregorio Marañón. The Fundación has two campuses, one in Madrid, the vast, modern and bustling capital of Spain, and the other in Toledo, the ancient Visigoth capital and one of Spain's splendid old-walled cities. http://www.ortegaygasset.edu
The program begins at the Toledo campus in the converted XVIth century convent of San Juan de la Penitencia where students receive an orientation to the program and to life in Spain. Following the orientation, the group moves to the Fundación's Madrid campus for the remainder of the semester.

Courses: Classes are small permitting a great deal of class discussion, assigned readings and papers. Students are in class Monday through Thursday with scheduled cultural visits and lectures on Fridays. Some of the courses make use of structured field trips introducing students to Madrileño culture and city life.
All students enroll in a minimum of four courses. It is required that all students take the Spanish Civilization course and at least one Spanish language course.
All courses taught on SMU Abroad programs are subject to change. SMU and the Fundacion reserve the right to cancel, change or add a course depending on enrollment and other factors. Not all courses are offered each semester. Students should check the SMU Abroad website for the most current course offerings. See the SMU Course Catalogue for credit hours and prerequisites.
Textbooks: All textbooks for the above course are available in Spain and are not included in the program fee.
Accommodations: There is no better way to learn about another culture than to stay in the homes of its people. Students live with families, allowing them opportunity to enjoy firsthand exposure to the language, people and culture of Spain. The Fundación takes great care in interviewing and selecting host families, as well as placing students with families. Many families have hosted foreign students for several years.
Housing assignments are made prior to student arrival in Madrid. Up to three students may be placed with a family, depending on space in the house and the wishes of the host. The homestay arrangement includes two meals daily, breakfast and dinner, plus laundry service. All homes are in metro Madrid, either walking or commuting distance from the campus.
Note: It is important that SMU students who want university housing on the SMU campus in Dallas after their semester abroad contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life prior to departure.
Applications and Acceptance: Students may submit an application to the SMU Abroad Office during application cycles: January 15-March 1 for fall semester and August 15-October 1 for spring semester. Admission is competitive. Selection of applicants is based upon meeting the program prerequisites, application materials, recommendations, personal statement and an interview in Spanish.
It is possible this program may be full before the deadline; therefore, students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications may be submitted after the deadline only if places are available in the program.
Program Admission and Pre-departure Orientation: Admission: Admission is competitive. Admitted on a rolling admissions basis, program directors and faculty select participants based on application materials, admission requirements and student interviews. Orientation Sessions: To prepare students for a smooth, safe and enriching experience, admitted SMU students are required to attend the scheduled program orientation meetings prior to departure. Session dates are organized by the program director.
All students receive a pre-departure guide and program-specific materials. Topics discussed are culture and course questions, as well as a review of required forms, travel plans and documents, currency and money issues, packing, insurance and safety. Students from other universities receive orientation summaries, including the guide and materials, by email.
Payment Information: There is a non-refundable deposit of $1,000 due by the deposit deadline of April 1 for fall semester and Nov. 1 for spring semester. This deposit confirms acceptance, holds the student's place in the program and is applied towards the balance of the program fee. Students will make the deposit payment in Access.SMU using the regular University payment procedures.
After student have paid the non-refundable program deposit and returned your Course Enrollment Form (signed by you and your academic advisor) to the SMU Abroad Office, students will be registered for courses in Access.SMU. Once students have been registered, students can make final payment in Access.SMU using the regular University payment procedures.
Financial Aid: Students who receive financial aid or scholarships may be able to apply their aid package to SMU Abroad programs. All aid should be confirmed with the Office of Financial Aid.
SMU Abroad Cancellation and Refund Policy: A student who cancels enrollment or withdraws from an SMU Abroad program must notify the SMU Abroad office in writing. The effective date of cancellation is the date that SMU Abroad receives the written notification. It is not sufficient only to withdraw an application on-line.
A student who cancels enrollment or withdraws from a program forfeits the program deposit. The student may also be charged either a cancellation fee or the remainder of the published program fee depending on the date of withdrawal. These fees cover expenses incurred on behalf of the student up to the effective date of the cancellation (see below).
